The Disability Supplement: Up to $6,000/Year Extra
Maximum Benefit Amount
Eligible families can receive up to $6,000 per year in additional funding. This benefit is paid out monthly alongside the Canada Child Benefit to help cover ongoing therapy and support costs.
Income Testing & Phase-Out
The supplement is calculated based on the household's annual earnings. The benefit begins to phase out for households earning approximately $200,000 per year, ensuring support is targeted to those who need it most.
Critical Requirement: Disability Tax Credit (DTC)
Accessing this supplement requires approval for the federal Disability Tax Credit. Families are strongly encouraged to begin the DTC application process immediately, as it can often take six months or longer to complete.
Which One Is You?
Four Common Scenarios for Families Navigating the Transition
Scenario 1
Currently Receiving Autism Funding
No immediate action is required. MCFD will contact you with a specific transition timeline. Your funding remains stable until your transition date or the program's end in 2027.
Scenario 2
Suspected Autism (No Diagnosis Yet)
Families suspecting autism should aim to apply for the current program before March 2027 to secure legacy support during the transition period.
Scenario 3
Other Diagnoses (Down Syndrome, FASD, etc.)
Families with diagnoses like Down syndrome or FASD, who were previously excluded from direct funding, can apply for the new benefit starting in April 2026.
Scenario 4
No Formal Diagnosis
Children with significant support needs but no formal label can now access funding based on functional impact assessments starting in 2026.
