What Is Pediatric OT? A BC Parent's Guide to Occupational Therapy for Kids
Many BC parents ask the same question: "What does an OT actually do for my child?"
It is a fair question. Occupational therapy — OT for short — helps kids do the things that fill their day. Getting dressed. Holding a pencil. Playing with friends. Eating without a meltdown.
At KidStart Pediatric Therapy, our OTs work with children from 18 months to age 12. We see kids with autism, ADHD, sensory differences, and developmental delays. This guide explains what OT is, what to expect, and how to get started.
Signs Your Child Might Benefit from OT
Not sure if OT is the right fit? These are common signs parents notice.
Sensory differences:
- Overreacts to loud sounds or bright lights
- Refuses certain textures of food or clothing
- Seeks constant movement — spinning, jumping, crashing into things
- Seems unaware of pain or does not notice bumps
Fine motor delays:
- Struggles to hold a crayon or spoon at the right age
- Cannot do up buttons or zippers by age 5
- Has messy or very slow printing
- Avoids drawing, cutting, or crafts
Trouble with daily routines:
- Has big meltdowns around getting dressed or bathing
- Cannot sit still for meals
- Finds transitions very hard — like stopping screen time
Play and social challenges:
- Mostly plays alone, even when other kids are around
- Gets frustrated easily during games
- Has trouble taking turns or sharing
If you see several of these signs, it is worth a conversation with a professional. Early support makes a real difference.
What Do OT Sessions Look Like?
Sessions at KidStart are play-based. Kids often do not realize they are "in therapy." They think they are having fun. That is exactly the point.
A session might include:
- Obstacle courses to build balance and body awareness
- Sensory bins with rice, sand, or water to practice touch tolerance
- Fine motor games like threading beads, tearing paper, or using tongs
- Zones of Regulation activities to help kids name and manage feelings
- Life skills practice like buttoning a shirt or packing a lunch kit
Our OTs adjust each session to meet your child where they are. We track progress at every visit and share updates with you.
