- BCBA pay in British Columbia varies by employer, experience and region, and this article does not quote a salary figure because we could not verify a current one from a primary source. For families, the more useful question is whether a clinic keeps experienced, BCBA-supervised staff, and you can ask about that directly.
*Funding figures in this article come from the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development and can change. Contact KidStart Pediatric Therapy for a personalized assessment.*

- Your child's ABA therapy quality depends on three things: your BCBA's training, how many children they work with, and whether they stay at the clinic. Pay matters because clinics that pay well keep their staff.
- BC Autism Funding pays up to $22,000 a year for children under 6 and up to $6,000 a year for ages 6 to 18, until the program ends on March 31, 2027. A needs-based BC Children and Youth Disability Benefit begins April 1, 2027.
- You can check any BCBA's certification for free in the Behavior Analyst Certification Board's online registry at bacb.com.
- Families in Burnaby, Coquitlam, and Greater Vancouver should ask five important questions before starting ABA therapy. This article explains all five.
What Is a BCBA, and Why Do Their Qualifications Matter?
A BCBA is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) issues the credential.
To earn BCBA certification, a person must:
- Get a master's degree or higher in behavior analysis or a related field
- Complete 1,500 to 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork
- Pass a detailed exam on behavior analysis and ethics
- Complete 32 continuing education units in every two-year recertification cycle to keep the certification
Getting BCBA certification takes years of study and supervised work.
Here is why this matters to your family.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is one of the most-studied interventions for young autistic children. A 2010 meta-analysis by Virués-Ortega in Clinical Psychology Review found that long-term, comprehensive ABA intervention produced medium to large effects on intellectual functioning, language, daily living skills and social functioning, with larger language gains at higher total treatment hours.
But this proof only works when ABA is delivered the right way. That means a qualified BCBA must design and oversee the therapy.
Without a certified BCBA in charge, no one makes sure the therapy follows proven methods. Real ABA research is about BCBA-supervised therapy. Just calling something "behavioral therapy" without a qualified BCBA overseeing it is not the same thing.
Your family deserves to know the difference.
How Much Do BCBAs Earn in British Columbia?
Families rarely think to ask this question. They should.
Pay for behaviour analysts in BC depends on experience, employer and region. We could not verify a current BC wage figure from a primary source, so we don't quote one. What you can ask a clinic is how it supports and keeps its BCBAs.
Families can find information about BCBA certification and the profession at bacb.com.
Why does this matter for your family?
When staff leave, your child gets a new therapist who has to learn your child all over again: what upsets them, what they like, and how they're progressing. For many autistic children, changes in the people they work with can be hard.
How Does BC Autism Funding Cover ABA Therapy Costs?
The BC Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) offers Autism Funding in two age bands.
BC Autism Funding, Under 6: up to $22,000 per year.
BC Autism Funding, Ages 6 to 18: up to $6,000 per year.
To get this funding, your child needs an autism diagnosis from a pediatrician, psychiatrist or registered psychologist. You apply through MCFD, choose eligible providers, and the Autism Funding Unit pays providers' invoices from your child's account.
The program ends on March 31, 2027, when a needs-based BC Children and Youth Disability Benefit begins. Check gov.bc.ca for current rules.
Our team at KidStart Pediatric Therapy helps Burnaby and Coquitlam families use this funding for therapy. Learn more on our autism funding support page.
Important: BC Autism Funding covers certain services up to the yearly limit. Intensive programs can cost more than the funding covers. Ask your provider exactly what the funding will pay for before you start.
What Questions Should I Ask Before Booking ABA Therapy for My Child?
These five questions are straightforward. They are not mean. Every BC family should ask them before starting therapy.
1. Can I verify your BCBA's active certification?
Every BCBA should have an active credential. You can check it yourself at bacb.com using the Certificant Registry. Type in the therapist's name. The registry shows if their credential is active and what their certification number is. It's free and open to everyone.
If a provider doesn't want you to check, that tells you something.
2. How many hours per month does the supervising BCBA watch my child's therapy sessions?
Many ABA programs have Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) run the actual therapy. RBTs are trained therapists who work under a BCBA's supervision. This is normal and okay.
What matters is how much the BCBA watches. If a BCBA has too many kids, they can't watch enough. Ask exactly how many hours per month the BCBA will watch your child's sessions in person — not just look at notes later.
3. How many children does the BCBA work with right now?
A BCBA with 15 kids spends less time with each one than a BCBA with 6 kids. Smaller caseloads mean better program planning, faster changes when needed, and more time watching sessions.
This matters. Ask for the exact number.
4. How do you track and share my child's progress?
Real ABA therapy keeps records at every session. A good BCBA puts progress on graphs and looks at them often. Changes to the plan come from the data, not from guessing.
Ask to see a sample progress report. Ask how often you'll get updates. If the clinic can't show you how they track progress, be worried.
5. What will my child's ABA program cover, and what won't it cover?
ABA therapy is not the same for every child. A good BCBA tests your child first and then builds a plan just for them. Goals might be communication, social skills, daily living skills, or behavior.
Know what goals the program will work on before you start. Know what it won't cover. Understand everything before you sign up.
Our behavioral therapy team at KidStart goes through these questions with every family before we start. You'll know what to expect.
How Does BCBA Compensation Affect Your Child's Therapy Continuity?
Let's be clear: consistency matters.
ABA intensity has been studied for decades. In Lovaas's 1987 study, 47% of 19 children who received about 40 hours a week of intensive behavioural treatment achieved normal intellectual and educational functioning, compared with 2% of a control group.
The key word is *consistent*. More hours help. A good relationship with the therapist helps. Keeping the same therapist helps.
When a BCBA leaves, your child loses that consistency.
The BCBA knew how your child responds. They knew what rewards work best. They knew how to help when your child gets upset. They built trust over time.
A change of therapist means building a new relationship, and some children need time to settle again.
What keeps BCBAs working at a clinic?
When you're looking at an ABA clinic in Burnaby or Metro Vancouver, ask how long the BCBAs have worked there. Ask how many staff stay at the clinic. High turnover is not just an office problem — it tells you something important about the care your child will get.

What Is the Difference Between a BCBA, a BCaBA, and an RBT?
Three credentials appear regularly in ABA therapy settings. Each role is different.
BCBA — Board Certified Behavior Analyst
- Needs a master's or doctoral degree
- Designs the therapy plan, watches it happen, and makes changes
- Makes all decisions about therapy
- Can supervise other therapists
BCaBA — Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst
- Needs a bachelor's degree
- Runs therapy programs that a BCBA designed
- Works under the supervision of a BCBA
RBT — Registered Behavior Technician
- Delivers therapy sessions in your home or clinic
- Works under a BCBA's watch
- Must complete required training and pass an exam
In most programs, your child sees an RBT for therapy. The BCBA plans the program, teaches the RBT how to run it, and watches what happens. This setup is normal — it makes therapy available while keeping it high quality.
You're paying for the BCBA's knowledge. The RBT does what the BCBA planned. How good the program is depends on how good the BCBA is.
This is why the BCBA credential is so important. It helps you understand what to look for when choosing a therapy provider.
What Should Families in Burnaby and Greater Vancouver Know Before Starting ABA Therapy?
Here's what every family in Metro Vancouver should know.
Wait lists are real. More families want ABA therapy than there are therapists. Start looking as soon as your child is diagnosed. Starting early gives you more options.
"ABA therapy" means different things. Not every program called ABA has a real BCBA in charge. Ask if a BCBA designed and is watching your child's program. Ask for their certification number from the BACB. Check it at bacb.com.
BC Autism Funding takes time. It's not automatic. Apply through MCFD right after diagnosis, because the process is slow. Ask MCFD how unused funding is handled.
Where the clinic is matters. Intensive ABA programs can run 20 to 40 hours a week. If your child goes four or five days a week, a clinic close to home makes life easier. Families in Burnaby, Coquitlam, and New Westminster should find a nearby provider.
Ask about intake before you start. A good clinic answers all the questions in this article without hesitation. A clinic that dodges or avoids talking about credentials is sending you a message.
